ATMS Guide to EAN.UCC
Logistics Labelling & Supply
Chain Management

Introduction
ATMS wishes to thank the GS1 for their assistance in preparing this document, and in particular
John Pearce of the GS1.
The EAN.UCC logistics labelling standard provides a world-wide standard for the labelling and
identification of pallets of product, rolls, containers, drums etc. We use the word 'pallet' in this
document as a general term meaning any of these units. The advantages of the standard include:
One
label for use by suppliers, distributors and customers throughout the supply chain.
Improved control procedures in warehousing and distribution.
Unique identification for standard and non-standard pallets.
A consistent link with EDI (electronic data interchange) business transactions.
Minimised costs with the use of the international standard, rather than several different
solutions.
The label provides core information about an item in both machine and human readable form. The
information that can be included within the standard is extensive - as indicated in the enclosed
table. It is up to the partners in the supply chain to decide on the information they mutually
require. Information might include, for instance; product code, quantity, purchase order number,
batch reference, sell by date. All pallets are uniquely identified and can therefore be tracked
throughout the supply chain until their breakdown.
Serial Shipping Container Codes (SSCC)
The minimum content of the label bar code is the SSCC. This uniquely identifies the pallet on a
world-wide basis for at least one year.
The SSCC is an 18 digit number that is always denoted by the application identifier 00 when it is
shown in a UCC/EAN-128 bar code. It is constructed as follows:
Application

*The extension digit can be any value from 0 to 9 and allows users to extend the numbering
capacity. It was previously known as the packaging indicator but it now has no meaning.
Company prefix numbers may be 7, 8 or 9 or even 10 digits long. The serial number is between 9
to 5 digits in length, depending on the length of the company prefix number, and is allocated by the
company making up the unit.
The check digit is calculated in the same way as for global trade item numbers (GTINs).
SSCCs must not be re-used for at least one year. The SSCC does not include the application
identifier.
Label Guidelines
Label size and layout
The normal format of the pallet label is based on the ISO standard A5 or A6. A5 is the common size
(148mm x 210mm). A6 is used where less information is required. In certain cases UCC/EAN bar
codes are presented on very small labels with minimal text.
The height of the bar codes should be at least 32mm. The maximum bar code length allowed is
165mm. Bearer bars (horizontal bars top and bottom) are optional but are useful to highlight
potential printing problems such as print head failure. The bar codes and bar code interpretation
occupy the lowest section of the label. The middle section contains the human readable
interpretation. The free format section is located at the top.
Label location
Although the logistics label can be used on any unit, it will often be used on a pallet. The same label
should appear on at least two adjacent sides.
For units taller than 1,000 mm the label should be positioned so that the bar codes are no higher
than 800 mm and no lower than 400 mm above the floor on which the unit stands. The edge of a
bar code should also be no closer than 50 mm to a vertical edge.
For units lower than 1,000 mm the label should be placed towards the base so that the SSCC is
alongside any EAN-13, ITF-14, or UCC/EAN-128 bar code providing product identification or
information.

Pallet Label - A5 Format
This is an example of a pallet label for a uniform fixed content pallet. The bar coded information
includes the serial shipping container code, the GTIN (product code), the quantity, the batch
number and the use by date.
Note that the SSCC for code is at the bottom of the label.
